The most popular Moto Maker color option is...Motorola's default smartphone color

Motorola's Moto Maker is a neat service that allows its customers to customize their Moto X smartphones, choosing different colors, textures like wood, and they can even get their name engraved on the back.

But it appears Motorola's customers have lost their sense of imagination.

We caught up with Marcus Frost, Motorola's senior marketing director for EMEIA, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Motorola didn't have any new news for the show, so we got some updates on how its current products are performing.

He couldn't give us any hard numbers, but he did offer an interesting nugget about Moto Maker.

He told us the most popular color people choose is black. He couldn't give us an exact percentage, but said it was in the small double digits.

Black. The Moto X default color. The same color as practically every other smartphone you see on the street.

It's a shame, as Moto Maker is one of the key features that sets the Moto X out from the rest of the Android smartphone market.

Look at Marcus' smartphone, for instance. He has opted for wood and he's got "Paranoid Android" etched on the back (he's a Radiohead fan.)

Motorola also has a customization option for its Moto 360 smartwatch — instead of the default rubber option, you can pay for leather or metal bands. Frost said he doesn't have figures on which is the best seller yet, but he anticipates the metal version will be the most popular option.
